Kick it With Monty is a two part product. Firstly is a 30 odd minute biography of Monty's rise from talented school boy to Springbok icon. Second is a 40 plus minute instructional kicking DVD. I worked closely with Monty to help him bring this vision to reality. With the help of the Phantom high speed camera we were able to film Monty kicking various kicks at 1000 frames per second. This helped Monty to break each kick down to its basics, enabling him to impart his technical know how and experience. Monty is a dynamic and fun person to collaborate with and I believe that we were able to create a great end result. Through this experience I was fortunate enough to meet some of the greats of South African rugby, an experience I will cherish.
Against the Flow is a 13 (x 24 minute) episode tv show that I conceptualized and directed. It is a road trip featuring four friends tracking the course of South Africa's longest river. The 2300 km long river has over time been known variously as the Orange, Groot, Gariep, Senqu or simply Great River. This odyssey begins in the stark coastal desert of the Northern Cape, at the mouth. It ends sixty-five days later at the source in the verdant highlands of Lesotho. From white water rafting to the pursuit of Fly-fishing, the river is engaged intimately. Tracking westerly across South Africa's thirstlands a collage of towns, histories, landscapes and experiences are documented. Characters ranging from San Bushman to a small town cheerleader, tell stories of mystical man-eating river snakes, elusive diamond eating yellow fish and events that have shaped the lives of those living alongside this mighty waterway. is a 28 minute short movie on which I was DOP. Being a freelancer I am able to choose projects of interest and this was certainly one of those. Director Mathew Jankes had his script selected by the Africa First initiative, a collaboration between the NFVF and Focus Features. Executive producer David Golden asked if I would DOP and mentor Mathew on the 10 day shoot based in and around Johannesburg, predominantly in the hustle and bustle of Hilbrow. It was more then inspiring to work with young and passionate film makers and be reminded just what determination can achieve. In the final days of celluloid I was lucky enough to shoot it on 35 mm.
